The Akula-class submarine—known in Russia as Project 971 “Shchuka-B”—is one of the most advanced and capable attack submarines developed during the late Cold War.
Designed for stealth, speed, and striking power, it became a cornerstone of the Soviet Navy and later the Russian Navy.
Design and Stealth
The Akula class marked a major leap forward in Soviet submarine technology:
- Nuclear-powered, allowing virtually unlimited range and endurance
- Advanced noise-reduction techniques, making it far quieter than earlier Soviet subs
- Streamlined hull design for improved underwater performance
These improvements significantly closed the gap with Western submarines in terms of stealth.
