Hobby Boss 1/700 Soviet Navy Oscar II Submarine # 87021
The Oscar II-class submarine, known in Russia as Project 949A “Antey”, is one of the largest and most heavily armed submarines ever built.
Developed during the Cold War for the Soviet Navy, it was specifically designed to counter Western naval power—particularly aircraft carrier battle groups.
Design and Purpose
Unlike typical attack submarines, the Oscar II class was built as a cruise missile platform:
- Massive double-hull construction for durability and survivability
- Nuclear-powered, enabling long-range, sustained operations
- Designed to operate in groups, coordinating attacks on high-value naval targets
Its large size reflects its primary role: carrying and launching heavy anti-ship missiles.
Armament
The Oscar II is best known for its formidable missile capability:
- Up to 24 P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 “Shipwreck”) anti-ship missiles
- Torpedoes for anti-submarine and close-range engagements
These missiles were designed to overwhelm enemy defences with coordinated, high-speed attacks.
Operational Role
Oscar II submarines were tasked with:
- Destroying aircraft carrier groups
- Long-range strike missions
- Fleet support and deterrence
Operating quietly beneath the surface, they could position themselves for a sudden and devastating missile strike.
Notable History
One of the most well-known submarines of this class is the Kursk (K-141), which was tragically lost in 2000 during a naval exercise.
Legacy
The Oscar II class represents the peak of Soviet naval strategy focused on asymmetric warfare at sea—using powerful missile platforms to counter larger surface fleets.
Even today, upgraded versions remain in service with the Russian Navy, continuing to serve as a potent reminder of Cold War naval engineering and firepower beneath the waves.
