The M8A1 US Inter-locking Aircraft Landing Mat was a vital piece of engineering developed by the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War to enable the rapid construction of temporary airfields in challenging environments.

Commonly known as pierced steel planking (PSP), these interlocking metal panels could be quickly assembled to create durable runways, taxiways, and hardstanding areas on otherwise unsuitable terrain such as mud, sand, or jungle.

Their distinctive perforated design reduced weight while maintaining strength and also improved drainage, helping to prevent water build-up and maintain usable surfaces in adverse conditions.

The M8A1 matting allowed engineers to establish forward airstrips close to combat zones, significantly improving operational flexibility and reducing response times for aircraft.

It played a crucial role in campaigns across Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific, where rapid airfield deployment was essential to maintaining air superiority and supporting ground operations.
