The Fiat G.50bis “Freccia” (“Arrow”) was an improved variant of Italy’s first operational monoplane fighter with an enclosed cockpit, developed by Fiat during the late 1930s.

Entering service in 1940, the G.50bis featured a more powerful Fiat A.74 RC38 radial engine producing 840 horsepower, enhanced fuel capacity for extended range, and a lengthened fuselage for improved handling and stability over the original G.50.

Armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the nose, the G.50bis was well suited for low- and medium-altitude dogfighting.

While slower and less heavily armed than many Allied contemporaries, it was rugged, manoeuvrable, and capable of absorbing significant battle damage.

The “Freccia” saw extensive service on multiple fronts, including the Western Desert, the Balkans, and the defence of Italy, as well as in the skies over Finland, where it earned respect for its agility and resilience in harsh northern conditions.

Despite its limitations in speed and firepower compared to later war fighters, the Fiat G.50bis proved a dependable and adaptable workhorse of the Regia Aeronautica, symbolising the transitional period of Italian fighter development in the early years of the Second World War.
