Fought in 53 BC, the Battle of Carrhae was a catastrophic Roman defeat that shattered the ambitions of Marcus Licinius Crassus, one of the three powerful men in Rome’s First Triumvirate—alongside Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great.

Seeking personal glory and wealth to rival his political partners, Crassus led a massive Roman army of around 40,000 men into Parthian territory, aiming to conquer the East.

Instead, he walked into disaster.

The Parthian general Surena, commanding a smaller but highly mobile force of horse archers and heavily armoured cataphracts, lured the Roman legions deep into the desert near the town of Carrhae (in modern-day Turkey).

With devastating hit-and-run tactics, the Parthians bombarded the Roman ranks with wave after wave of arrows, exploiting their rigid formations and lack of cavalry support.

Crassus's army was encircled, demoralised, and ultimately crushed.

Crassus himself was killed during a failed negotiation, and Roman losses were staggering—20,000 dead and 10,000 captured.

The humiliating defeat marked one of Rome’s worst military disasters and exposed the vulnerability of the legions against fast-moving eastern cavalry tactics.

The Battle of Carrhae not only ended Crassus’s life and ambitions, but also destabilised the fragile balance of power within the First Triumvirate, paving the way for the civil war between Caesar and Pompey—and the eventual fall of the Roman Republic.
