Mikro-Mir 1/144 Nordenfelt IV Submarine # 041
The Nordenfelt IV was one of the most advanced submarines of its time, built in the late 1880s as part of the pioneering efforts to bring underwater warfare into practical use.
Designed by Swedish engineer Thorsten Nordenfelt, the vessel represented a significant evolution over earlier experimental submarines, combining improved engineering with genuine combat capability.
Constructed with a streamlined, cigar-shaped hull, the Nordenfelt IV was powered by a steam engine for surface running.
Before diving, the boiler would be shut down, and the submarine relied on stored steam pressure—an arrangement that required careful timing and limited how long it could remain submerged.
Despite these constraints, the design marked an important step toward controlled underwater navigation.
One of the most notable achievements of the Nordenfelt IV was its role in the Ottoman Empire, where it became known as Abdülhamid.
In 1886, it made history by successfully launching a torpedo while submerged—one of the earliest recorded examples of this capability.
This demonstration proved that submarines could function as true offensive weapons rather than experimental curiosities.
Armament consisted of externally mounted torpedo tubes, and the submarine required a well-coordinated crew to manage ballast, propulsion, and weapon systems simultaneously.
However, like other early submarines, it suffered from reliability issues, limited underwater endurance, and the practical challenges of operating steam-powered machinery in a confined environment.
Although the Nordenfelt IV did not lead directly to widespread adoption, its successful torpedo launch and operational trials were a major milestone in naval history.
It helped establish the submarine as a viable platform for warfare and influenced the rapid development of more advanced designs in the years leading into the 20th century.
