Mikro-Mir 1/72 Lockheed 'Have Blue' 'Hopeless Diamond' # 031
The Lockheed “Have Blue”, often nicknamed the “Hopeless Diamond,” was a groundbreaking experimental aircraft developed in the 1970s that laid the foundation for modern stealth technology.
Built in utmost secrecy by Lockheed Skunk Works, the project aimed to create an aircraft that could evade radar detection rather than rely on speed or heavy armament for survival.
Its unusual, faceted shape—earning it the “Hopeless Diamond” nickname—was not designed for aerodynamics but for radar deflection.
Based on theoretical work by Soviet physicist Pyotr Ufimtsev, the aircraft’s flat surfaces scattered radar waves away from their source, dramatically reducing its radar cross-section.
This radical design made the aircraft inherently unstable, requiring the use of advanced fly-by-wire control systems to keep it airborne.
Two prototypes were built and tested in the Nevada desert, where they demonstrated that stealth was not only possible but practical.
Although both aircraft were eventually lost in accidents, the program was considered a major success, proving the viability of low-observable technology.
The lessons learned from Have Blue directly led to the development of the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, the world’s first operational stealth combat aircraft.
The influence of the program extended even further, shaping the design philosophy of later stealth aircraft across the globe.
Despite its short operational life, the “Hopeless Diamond” stands as one of the most important experimental aircraft ever built—an aircraft that fundamentally changed the future of aerial warfare by making invisibility to radar a reality.
