The StuH 42 Ausf. G (Sturmhaubitze 42) was a late-war German self-propelled howitzer based on the proven StuG III chassis, adapted for infantry support.
This particular variant, produced by MIAG (Mühlenbau und Industrie AG), represents one of the final production runs and incorporates numerous late-war features for improved survivability and firepower.
Armed with the 105mm leFH 18 howitzer, the StuH 42 was designed to deliver high-explosive firepower against enemy infantry, fortifications, and light vehicles.
Unlike the StuG III’s anti-tank role, the StuH 42 filled the critical gap in direct artillery support, especially during defensive operations on the Eastern and Western Fronts.
The late MIAG production models are identifiable by key features such as the cast mantlet with coaxial machine gun, remote-controlled MG34 on the roof, and the use of simplified armor components to streamline manufacturing.
Side skirts (Schürzen) were often fitted for added protection against anti-tank rifles and shaped charges.
Reliable, heavily armed, and easy to produce, the StuH 42 Ausf. G proved to be a valuable asset in the final stages of World War II, reflecting Germany's shift to more versatile and rapidly deployable armored vehicles.
