The Dassault Mirage G8-02 was an advanced French experimental fighter developed in the late 1960s as part of Dassault’s ambitious research into variable-geometry (swing-wing) aircraft.
Conceived to combine short take-off and landing performance with exceptional high-speed interception capability, the Mirage G8 programme represented a major departure from Dassault’s traditional delta-wing philosophy.
As the second and more powerful prototype, the G8-02 was powered by twin SNECMA Atar 9K-50 turbojet engines, providing outstanding thrust and enabling speeds in excess of Mach 2.
Its variable-sweep wings could be adjusted in flight, allowing the aircraft to optimise lift and handling at low speeds while maintaining excellent stability and performance at supersonic velocities.
Flight testing demonstrated that the Mirage G8-02 possessed impressive acceleration, high-altitude performance, and a wide operational envelope.
Despite its technical success and advanced design, the programme was ultimately cancelled due to cost, complexity, and changing strategic priorities, with Dassault choosing to pursue more economical fixed-wing fighters such as the Mirage F1 and later the Mirage 2000.
Today, the Mirage G8-02 is remembered as one of the most powerful and capable swing-wing fighters ever built in Europe—a striking example of Cold War innovation and a fascinating subject for aviation historians and scale modellers alike.
