During the Second World War, Finnish armoured forces played a crucial yet modest role in the nation’s fight for survival against the Soviet Union during both the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944).

The Finnish tank crews were a small but highly resourceful branch of the army, often operating with limited numbers of armoured vehicles—many of which were captured from the Red Army and pressed into Finnish service.

These crews manned an eclectic mix of tanks, including captured Soviet T-26 light tanks, BT-series fast tanks, and the formidable T-34/76, alongside a handful of German-supplied StuG III assault guns.

Conditions inside these vehicles were harsh, with cramped interiors, poor visibility, and extreme temperatures ranging from bitter Arctic cold to humid summer heat.

Finnish tankers typically wore a mix of uniforms—standard field tunics or winter parkas with fur-lined caps—supplemented by improvised gear suited to Finland’s varied climate.

Communication between crew members was often conducted through simple speaking tubes or hand signals due to the lack of advanced radio equipment in many vehicles.

Despite being heavily outnumbered and technically outmatched, Finnish tank crews developed effective tactics, using terrain, camouflage, and ambushes to maximise their impact.

Their adaptability and determination allowed them to inflict significant losses on much larger Soviet armoured formations, earning them a respected place in Finland’s military history.
