During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the Spanish Republican Air Force relied on a diverse and courageous group of aviators who fought to defend the elected Republican government against the Nationalist forces of General Francisco Franco.

These pilots came from varied backgrounds—some were career military fliers, others were civilian pilots pressed into service, and many were foreign volunteers who joined under the banner of international solidarity.

The Republican pilots operated a mix of aircraft sourced from multiple nations, most notably Soviet-supplied Polikarpov I-15 "Chato" biplanes and I-16 "Mosca" monoplanes, as well as French and American types.

Training standards varied, but their determination was unwavering. Facing the Condor Legion’s modern German aircraft and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria, Republican pilots were often outmatched in numbers and technology, yet they fought with skill and ingenuity.

Many adopted hit-and-run tactics, using superior maneuverability at low altitudes to offset enemy advantages.

Foreign volunteers from the USSR, France, the United States, and other countries flew alongside Spaniards, creating a multicultural force bonded by a common cause.

While the Republican Air Force ultimately could not turn the tide of war, the bravery of its pilots remains a symbol of resistance against fascism and an important chapter in early 20th-century aviation history.
