The Avro Manchester Mk.I was a British twin-engined heavy bomber developed for the Royal Air Force during the early years of the Second World War.
Entering service in 1941, it was powered by two Rolls-Royce Vulture 24-cylinder X-type engines, each delivering 1,760 hp.
The Manchester featured a mid-mounted wing, a deep fuselage, and initially a twin-fin tail unit, later modified to a distinctive triple-fin arrangement to improve stability.
It carried a crew of seven and could deliver up to 4,000 lb of bombs over a range of around 1,600 km, with defensive armament of eight .303 Browning machine guns in nose, dorsal, and tail turrets.
Although the Manchester had modern features and strong defensive armament, its underpowered and unreliable Vulture engines severely limited performance and operational reliability.
Just 202 were built before production shifted to the four-engined Avro Lancaster, which retained the Manchester’s basic airframe but offered greatly improved range, payload, and durability.
Despite its short service life, the Manchester played a key role in the RAF’s transition to the heavy bomber force that would dominate later in the war.
