Revell 1/48 Bristol Beaufighter Mk.VI # 03767
The Bristol Beaufighter Mk.VI was a formidable British long-range heavy fighter and strike aircraft, developed from the earlier Beaufort torpedo bomber.
Entering service in 1941, the Mk.VI became one of the most widely produced and versatile versions of the Beaufighter, serving in multiple theatres of the Second World War.
Powered by two Bristol Hercules VI or XVI radial engines, it offered excellent performance at low and medium altitudes, with a maximum speed of around 320 mph (515 km/h) and a range of up to 1,500 miles (2,400 km) with external tanks.
Its heavy armament made it a fearsome adversary: four 20 mm Hispano cannons mounted in the nose and six .303 Browning machine guns in the wings.
Later modifications enabled it to carry bombs, rockets, or even torpedoes, expanding its role from pure fighter to night fighter, ground-attack aircraft, and maritime strike platform.
The Mk.VI was built in both fighter and long-range fighter configurations. It was especially effective in the night fighter role, fitted with early AI Mk.V radar, helping the RAF’s night fighter squadrons counter German bombing raids during the Blitz.
In the Mediterranean and Pacific, it earned the nickname “Whispering Death” among Japanese forces, due to the quiet approach of its Hercules engines during low-level strikes.
Rugged, adaptable, and heavily armed, the Bristol Beaufighter Mk.VI exemplified the ingenuity of British wartime aircraft design.
Its service record spanned Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East, leaving a legacy as one of the RAF’s most versatile and effective strike aircraft of the Second World War.
