Revell 1/72 Focke-Wulf FW-200C-5/C-8 Condor # 03777
The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 “Condor” was a German four-engined, long-range aircraft that began life as a civilian airliner for Deutsche Luft Hansa before being converted for military use during the Second World War.
Its transformation into the Fw 200C series produced one of the Luftwaffe’s most distinctive maritime patrol and anti-shipping aircraft—earning it the title “Scourge of the Atlantic.”
The C-series introduced reinforced airframes, bomb racks, and defensive armament to adapt the elegant pre-war airliner for combat duty.
The Fw 200C-5 served primarily as a long-range reconnaissance and bomber platform, capable of carrying mines, bombs, or depth charges while coordinating with German U-boats to locate and attack Allied convoys.
Later, the C-8 variant represented the pinnacle of the Condor’s evolution—equipped with the FuG 200 Hohentwiel maritime radar and capable of deploying Hs 293 guided missiles from wing-mounted hardpoints.
Despite its success early in the Battle of the Atlantic, the Condor’s civilian origins limited its durability.
Crews often reported structural fatigue and vulnerability to defensive fire, leading to many airframes being reassigned to transport and liaison duties by the war’s later years.
Powered by four BMW 323 radial engines, the Condor measured approximately 23 metres in length with a 32.8 metre wingspan, crewed by seven men, and armed with multiple defensive gun positions.
Elegant yet fragile, the Fw 200C-5/C-8 Condor remains a striking example of wartime ingenuity—a commercial airliner transformed into a formidable long-range maritime hunter that patrolled the Atlantic skies in support of Germany’s U-boat fleet.
