The first Ki-61 prototype took off in December 1941, and tests of other prototypes took place during 1942.

At the end of 1942, these aircraft began to be mass-produced, and they did not reach military units until the beginning of 1943.

In the fall of the same year, the armament was strengthened, and during the war, further improvements and production of modernized modifications took place.

The Ki-61 earned the respect of the Allies in battles over New Guinea, the Philippines, Taiwan and Okinawa.

They formed part of Tokyo's anti-air defense armament, but they were not enough for the B-29's flying fortress. A total of 3078 pieces of machines of all versions were produced.

3 decal variants:

1. Ki-61Ko, Akeno Fighter School, Japan 1943

Short Description

The Kawasaki Ki-61-I Ko, codenamed "Hien" (meaning "Flying Swallow") by the Allies, was a Japanese fighter aircraft developed during World War II.

It was the first mass-produced variant of the Ki-61 series and was notable for being the only mass-produced Japanese fighter to be powered by an inline engine rather than a radial engine.

Powered by a liquid-cooled Kawasaki Ha-40 inline engine, the Ki-61-I Ko exhibited excellent speed and performance at high altitudes.

Its sleek design and advanced aerodynamics gave it good maneuverability, making it a formidable opponent for Allied fighters.

Armed with two 12.7mm machine guns mounted in the nose and two 20mm cannons in the wings, the Ki-61-I Ko was well-armed and capable of engaging enemy aircraft with effective firepower.

Despite its impressive performance, the Ki-61-I Ko faced some challenges, including engine reliability issues and a shortage of skilled pilots.

Additionally, its inline engine made it vulnerable to damage, particularly from enemy fire.

Nevertheless, the Ki-61-I Ko saw extensive service with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service (IJAAF) during World War II, participating in various combat operations across the Pacific theater.

It earned a reputation as a capable and versatile fighter, contributing to Japan's aerial defense efforts until the end of the war.
