The Dassault SMB-2 Super Mystère B.2 was a French supersonic fighter-bomber and holds the distinction of being Western Europe’s first aircraft capable of sustained supersonic flight in level flight.
Developed in the mid-1950s by Dassault Aviation, it represented the final and most advanced evolution of the Mystère series.
Powered by a SNECMA Atar 101G turbojet, the Super Mystère featured a swept-wing design with improved aerodynamics, an all-moving tailplane, and significantly increased performance over its predecessors.
It was armed with two 30 mm DEFA cannons and could carry a variety of external stores, including bombs, rockets, and drop tanks, allowing it to operate effectively in both air-to-air and ground-attack roles.
The Super Mystère entered service with the Armée de l’Air in 1957 and was later exported, most notably to Israel, where it saw extensive combat use.
In Israeli Air Force service, the aircraft proved rugged and effective, flying numerous strike and air-combat missions during the Six-Day War (1967) and the War of Attrition, scoring air-to-air victories against contemporary adversaries.
Although quickly superseded by more advanced supersonic fighters, the Super Mystère marked an important technological milestone in European aviation.
Its sleek lines, operational history, and role in early jet combat make the Dassault SMB-2 Super Mystère a highly attractive subject for aviation historians and scale modellers alike.
