The USS San Francisco (CA-38) was a heavy cruiser that served in the United States Navy during World War II.

In 1942, this warship gained significant recognition for its heroic and valiant actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal.

In November 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the USS San Francisco played a pivotal role in the U.S. Navy's efforts to defend Guadalcanal from Japanese forces.

Despite being heavily damaged by enemy fire, the ship's crew displayed exceptional courage and determination.

The cruiser's gunners fought with great tenacity, inflicting damage on several Japanese warships, including the battleship Hiei.

The USS San Francisco's actions in the battle earned it the nickname "The Galloping Ghost of the Oahu Coast" due to the extensive battle damage it endured and the resilience of its crew.

This engagement at Guadalcanal marked a crucial turning point in the Pacific War, and the USS San Francisco's contribution was vital to the U.S. victory.

After undergoing extensive repairs, the USS San Francisco returned to service and continued its operations in the Pacific theater throughout the war.
