Feared and formidable, the Sōhei (Japanese warrior monks) were a unique and powerful force in medieval Japan.

Originating from Buddhist temples during the Heian period, these monks combined religious devotion with martial prowess.

Armed with naginata (polearms), swords, and even bows, they defended temple lands, engaged in regional conflicts, and often clashed with rival sects or samurai clans.

Notably active during the Genpei War and the feudal struggles of the Sengoku period, the warrior monks of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei were among the most influential.

Their ability to field trained, disciplined forces made them both a spiritual and military power—until Oda Nobunaga, seeking to consolidate authority, brutally suppressed them in the late 16th century.

The Sōhei remain a symbol of Japan's turbulent fusion of faith and warfare.
