The Curtiss C-46 Commando is a twin-engine transport plane based on the Curtiss CW-20 pressurised high-altitude airliner.
The term 'Condor III' was used in early press reports, but the Commando designation was utilised in business publicity by early 1942.
During World War II, it was utilised as a military transport by the US Army Air Forces as well as the US Navy/Marine Corps, which adopted the designation R5C.
The C-46 Skytrain performed a similar function as its Douglas-built sibling, the C-47 Skytrain, but it was not as widely constructed.
After WWII, a few excess C-46 planes were briefly utilised as passenger planes, but the surplus C-47s dominated the market, and the C-46 was quickly relegated to freight duty.
The aircraft was used in a secondary role by the United States Air Force until 1968.
The C-46 is still in use as a tough cargo transport for the Arctic and other isolated places, with a service life that has been extended into the twenty-first century.
