The Vickers Wellesley Mk.I (LRDU) was a British single-engine, long-range bomber aircraft developed by Vickers-Armstrongs in the late 1930s.

It was designed to meet a Royal Air Force (RAF) specification for a bomber that could operate at long range in the Middle East and Africa.

The Wellesley was a monoplane with a fixed undercarriage, and it was powered by a Bristol Pegasus XVIII radial engine.

It had a maximum speed of around 235 miles per hour and a range of approximately 2,400 miles.

The aircraft was armed with a single .303 machine gun in the rear cockpit and could carry up to 1,000 pounds of bombs.

During World War II, the Wellesley was used primarily for reconnaissance and bombing missions in North Africa and the Middle East.

It was also used for supply drops to Allied troops in Ethiopia and Burma. Despite its long range and respectable speed, the Wellesley was considered to be obsolete by the outbreak of the war, and it was gradually phased out of service in favor of more modern aircraft.

One notable achievement of the Wellesley was its use in the 1935 RAF Long Range Development Unit (LRDU) mission to fly from Ismailia in Egypt to Darwin in Australia, a distance of over 7,000 miles.

The aircraft made the journey in four stages, covering a distance of 5,268 miles in just over 48 hours of flying time.

This was a significant achievement at the time and helped to establish the potential of long-range air power.
