The RDS-6s, also known as “Joe-4” in the West, was the Soviet Union’s first successful thermonuclear device and a pivotal milestone in Cold War weapons development.
Detonated on August 12, 1953, this bomb represented a major leap forward in Soviet nuclear capabilities, employing a "layered" or "Sloika" design—a fusion-boosted fission device rather than a true multi-stage hydrogen bomb.
Unlike later two-stage thermonuclear weapons, the RDS-6s used lithium-6 deuteride fuel layers surrounding a fission core, producing a yield of approximately 400 kilotons—several times more powerful than earlier atomic bombs.
The test shocked Western intelligence, demonstrating that the Soviet Union was rapidly closing the nuclear gap.
The RDS-27 followed as a weaponized version of the RDS-6s, designed for operational deployment.
Although eventually eclipsed by more advanced multi-stage designs, these early thermonuclear bombs marked a critical turning point in the global arms race, solidifying the Soviet Union’s status as a nuclear superpower.
