Northrop F-5N+ Tiger II VFC-111 “Sundowners” Fighter Aircraft is a striking and highly capable adversary jet operated by the US Navy to simulate enemy aircraft in advanced combat training.
Based on the legendary Northrop F-5 Tiger II, the F-5N+ is an upgraded variant tailored for aggressor duties, featuring enhanced avionics, structural improvements, and extended service life.
Lightweight, agile, and exceptionally manoeuvrable, it closely replicates the performance characteristics of potential threat aircraft, making it ideal for dissimilar air combat training (DACT).
Operated by VFC-111 “Sundowners”, these aircraft are renowned for their eye-catching liveries, often inspired by adversary camouflage schemes and featuring the unit’s iconic rising sun tail markings.
Based at Naval Air Station Key West, the squadron plays a vital role in preparing US Navy and Marine Corps pilots for real-world combat scenarios.
