The Curtiss P-36A Hawk was an American single-engine, all-metal fighter aircraft that marked a key step in the transition from biplanes to modern monoplane fighters for the U.S. Army Air Corps in the late 1930s.
Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engine producing 1,050 horsepower, the P-36A could reach speeds of around 313 mph (504 km/h) and had a service ceiling of over 30,000 feet.
The aircraft featured smooth, streamlined lines, a retractable landing gear, and an enclosed cockpit—innovations that made it a leap forward compared to earlier designs.
Its armament typically consisted of one .50-calibre and one .30-calibre machine gun mounted in the nose, with later versions adding wing guns for improved firepower.
Although soon overshadowed by more advanced aircraft like the P-40 Warhawk, the P-36A saw combat in the early stages of World War II, notably during the attack on Pearl Harbor, where a handful of American pilots managed to shoot down Japanese aircraft using the aging Hawk.
The P-36A’s robust design and excellent handling characteristics made it a valued training and export fighter, serving with air forces around the world—including France, Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands East Indies.
As one of the first truly modern U.S. fighters, the Curtiss P-36A laid the groundwork for the generation of high-performance warplanes that followed.
