The Sd.Kfz. 251/22, commonly known as the Pakwagen, was a late-war German half-track variant armed with a powerful 7.5 cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun.
Designed as a mobile tank destroyer, it was based on the versatile Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf. D chassis and adapted to counter increasing numbers of Allied armored vehicles.
The PaK 40 gun, mounted directly onto the vehicle’s open-topped compartment, gave the Pakwagen significant firepower capable of destroying most enemy tanks at medium range.
However, its thin armor and exposed crew made it vulnerable to return fire and air attacks.
Introduced in 1944, the Sd.Kfz. 251/22 offered a cost-effective solution to Germany's need for mobile anti-tank support.
While limited in production and late to the front, it was valued for its combination of firepower, mobility, and tactical flexibility—often used in ambush roles or defensive positions during the closing stages of the war.
