The Grumman F7F-2 Tigercat was an improved development of Grumman’s powerful twin-engine fighter line, created to refine handling and operational capability following evaluation of earlier variants.
Intended for carrier use, the F7F-2 incorporated a strengthened airframe, revised vertical tails, and aerodynamic improvements that gave it better stability and performance across all flight regimes.
Powered by two formidable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines, the Tigercat delivered exceptional speed, rapid climb rates, and long-range capability — easily outperforming many single-engine fighters of its era.
Armed with four 20 mm cannons and four .50 cal machine guns, plus the option to carry bombs or rockets, it was designed as a multi-role platform able to tackle interception, ground-attack, and escort duties with equal effectiveness.
The F-2N designation was applied to the night-fighter conversion of the F7F-2, fitted with a radar-equipped nose and specialised electronic systems for all-weather interception.
These aircraft served with U.S. Marine Corps squadrons, providing a fast, heavy-hitting night-fighter capability during the immediate post-WWII and early Cold War years.
