The Grumman F7F-2D Tigercat was a specialised conversion of the powerful twin-engine Tigercat fighter, adapted for the increasingly important role of drone control during the early Cold War era.
As jet-age weapons testing expanded, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps required fast, stable aircraft capable of guiding pilotless drones for live-fire exercises — and the rugged Tigercat proved an ideal platform.
Based on the early F7F-2 airframe, the F7F-2D received distinctive modifications including drone navigation antennas, control transmitters, and specialised electronics situated in a revised nose section.
These systems allowed the aircraft’s crew to remotely operate target drones during missile trials, gunnery training, and evaluation of new weapons technologies.
Retaining its twin Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engines, the F7F-2D continued to offer the Tigercat’s renowned power, speed, and stability.
Though no longer used as a frontline fighter, the aircraft played a critical support role in the evolution of guided weapons — bridging the gap between WWII piston aircraft and modern missile-era test programmes.
For modellers, the F7F-2D is an unusual and visually striking Tigercat variant featuring:
