The Kfir C-2 was a major production variant of Israel’s domestically developed Kfir (“Lion Cub”) multirole fighter, entering service with the Israeli Air Force (IAF) in the mid-1970s.

Based on the French Dassault Mirage 5 airframe and powered by a U.S.-made General Electric J79 turbojet engine (also used in the F-4 Phantom II), the Kfir C-2 was a powerful blend of French design and Israeli innovation.

The C-2 featured canard foreplanes, dogtooth extensions on the wings, and improved avionics over the earlier C-1, significantly enhancing its agility and stability in combat.

Primarily used in ground attack and air superiority roles, the Kfir C-2 saw extensive action in IAF operations during the late 1970s and early 1980s, including raids in Lebanon and against Syrian targets.

Armed with internal cannons and capable of carrying a wide variety of bombs, rockets, and missiles—including the AIM-9 Sidewinder—the Kfir C-2 gave Israel a potent edge in the region before being gradually replaced by U.S.-built F-15s and F-16s.

Its rugged versatility and combat record helped establish Israel’s defense industry on the global stage, and variants of the Kfir would go on to serve in several other countries.
