The Grumman TBF Avenger, and its General Motors-produced counterpart TBM-1C, was a carrier-based torpedo bomber used extensively by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during World War II.

Introduced in 1942, the Avenger was renowned for its rugged design, large payload capacity, and long range.

The 1C variant featured upgrades such as wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns and improved radio equipment.

Crewed by three—pilot, turret gunner, and radioman/bombardier—the Avenger could deliver torpedoes, bombs, or depth charges, making it highly versatile.

It saw action in every major naval battle in the Pacific, from Midway to Okinawa, and played a vital role in anti-shipping and anti-submarine operations throughout the war.
