Hobby 2000 1/72 Kugisho E14Y1 Model 11 'Glen' with Catapult # 72034
The Kugisho E14Y1 Model 11, known by the Allied reporting name “Glen,” was a compact reconnaissance floatplane developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the early years of the Second World War.
Designed for operation from submarines, the E14Y1 was uniquely adapted to be disassembled, stored in a watertight hangar, and quickly assembled and launched via catapult once the submarine surfaced.
This capability gave Japanese forces an unusual and far-reaching scouting advantage across vast stretches of the Pacific.
Primarily used for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, the E14Y1 could survey harbours, track enemy ship movements, and relay valuable information back to its parent submarine.
Its small size, folding wings, and twin floats allowed it to operate effectively in remote ocean environments where conventional aircraft could not reach.
The aircraft is perhaps best remembered for its role in one of the only air attacks on the continental United States during World War II.
In September 1942, an E14Y1 launched from a Japanese submarine dropped incendiary bombs over the forests of Oregon in an attempt to start wildfires—an unusual and largely symbolic operation that highlighted the aircraft’s unique strategic reach.
Although lightly armed and relatively slow, the Kugisho E14Y1 demonstrated ingenuity in design and operational flexibility.
It remains a fascinating example of submarine-based aviation and a testament to the innovative approaches used during the war to extend reconnaissance capabilities far beyond traditional limits.
