Hobby Boss 1/35 German 3.7cm Pak 35/36 auf Pz.Kpfw 35R(f) # 83895
The 3.7cm PaK 35/36 auf Pz.Kpfw. 35R(f) was an early German attempt to create a mobile anti-tank platform by mounting a light anti-tank gun onto a captured French tank chassis.
This improvised vehicle emerged following Germany’s rapid victories in Western Europe, where large numbers of enemy vehicles were taken into service.
Origins and Design
After the fall of France in 1940, the Renault R35—redesignated by Germany as Pz.Kpfw. 35R(f)—became available in significant numbers.
To improve their battlefield usefulness, German engineers mounted the 3.7 cm PaK 35/36 onto the chassis.
Key characteristics included:
- Removal of the original turret
- Installation of a 37mm anti-tank gun in an open-topped fighting compartment
- Light armour and limited crew protection
Role and Purpose
This vehicle was designed to provide mobile anti-tank capability at a time when Germany needed more flexible solutions against increasingly armoured enemy vehicles.
Typical roles:
- Infantry support
- Anti-tank ambushes
- Rear-area and occupation duties
Strengths and Limitations
Strengths:
- Reused captured equipment efficiently
- Provided mobility to an otherwise towed anti-tank gun
- Quick and inexpensive conversion
Limitations:
- The 37mm gun was becoming obsolete against newer Allied tanks
- Thin armour and open-top design left the crew vulnerable
- Limited effectiveness on the evolving battlefield
Development and Legacy
This conversion was part of a broader trend that led to more capable vehicles such as the Marder I, which used heavier guns on similar captured chassis.
Although the PaK 35/36 auf Pz.Kpfw. 35R(f) had limited impact, it represents an important transitional step in German armoured warfare—demonstrating adaptability and the early development of self-propelled anti-tank systems.
