Hobby Boss 1/35 Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.C (VK 601) # 82431
The Panzer I Ausf. C, also known by its development designation VK 601, was a highly specialised and experimental evolution of the early Panzer I series.
Unlike its predecessors, which were primarily training and light combat vehicles, the Ausf. C was designed as a high-speed reconnaissance tank.
Design and Development
Developed during the early years of the Second World War, the VK 601 represented a significant departure from earlier Panzer I models:
- Completely redesigned hull and suspension
- Much heavier armour than previous versions
- Advanced torsion bar suspension for improved mobility
Despite its small size, it was far more sophisticated than the original Panzer I.
Performance and Role
The Ausf. C was built for speed and agility:
- Capable of speeds up to around 65 km/h (40 mph)
- Intended for reconnaissance and rapid scouting missions
- Designed to operate ahead of main armoured units
Its mobility made it suitable for fast-moving operations, aligning with German armoured doctrine.
Armament
Unlike many tanks of its era, the Ausf. C retained relatively light armament:
- Equipped with a 7.92mm EW 141 semi-automatic machine gun
- Limited anti-armour capability
This reflected its intended role as a scout rather than a frontline combat tank.
Operational Use
Only a small number of these vehicles were produced, making them quite rare. They saw limited service, including:
- Deployment on the Eastern Front
- Use in specialised reconnaissance units
However, the concept was not widely adopted, as other reconnaissance vehicles—such as armoured cars and half-tracks—proved more practical.
Legacy
The Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf. C stands as an example of German experimentation in armoured vehicle design.
It combined speed, protection, and innovation in a compact platform, but its limited production and niche role meant it had little impact on the overall course of the war.
Today, it remains a fascinating and uncommon variant within the Panzer family—valued by historians and enthusiasts for its unique design and purpose.
