The Kamov Ka-50 “Hokum”, known in Russia as the “Black Shark,” is a highly distinctive and innovative attack helicopter developed during the final years of the Soviet Union.

Designed by the renowned Kamov design bureau, it broke away from conventional helicopter layouts with its unique coaxial rotor system—featuring two counter-rotating main rotors and no tail rotor.

This configuration provided exceptional agility, stability, and compactness, allowing the Ka-50 to perform tight manoeuvres and operate effectively in confined areas.

It also reduced vulnerability by eliminating the exposed tail rotor, a common weak point on traditional helicopters.

Unlike most attack helicopters, the Ka-50 was designed as a single-seat aircraft, placing full control of flight and weapons systems in the hands of one pilot.

Advanced avionics and automation were incorporated to reduce workload, enabling the pilot to manage navigation, targeting, and combat operations efficiently.

Armed with a powerful 30mm cannon and capable of carrying a wide array of missiles and rockets—including anti-tank guided weapons—the Ka-50 was built to engage armoured targets and provide close air support.

Its robust armour protection and survivability features further enhanced its effectiveness in high-threat environments.

The Ka-50 also introduced an advanced pilot safety feature rarely seen in helicopters: an ejection seat system, designed to safely remove the pilot in extreme emergencies.

Though produced in limited numbers, the Ka-50 remains an iconic and forward-thinking design, showcasing a bold approach to attack helicopter development and influencing future rotorcraft concepts.
