The A10 Mk.IA Cruiser Tank Close Support (CS) was a British cruiser tank developed in the late 1930s to provide battlefield support for advancing armoured units.
Unlike standard cruiser tanks armed with anti-tank guns, the Close Support version was equipped with a 3.7-inch howitzer designed to fire high-explosive and smoke rounds, allowing it to suppress enemy positions and provide cover for attacking forces.
Based on the Cruiser Tank Mk II (A10) chassis, the Mk.IA featured improved armour compared to earlier cruiser designs while maintaining reasonable mobility.
The tank served with British armoured divisions during the early years of the Second World War, particularly in the Battle of France in 1940 and later in the North African campaign.
Although soon replaced by more advanced cruiser tanks, the A10 Mk.IA played an important role in the development of British armoured doctrine.
Its dedicated close support role highlighted the importance of combined firepower within armoured formations, supporting both infantry and tank units during early war operations.
