Uniforms of the Afrika Korps were specially adapted for service in the harsh desert conditions of North Africa during the Second World War.

Worn by troops of the Deutsches Afrikakorps, these uniforms were designed to provide comfort, practicality, and protection against extreme heat and dust.

Typically produced in light sand or khaki tones, Afrika Korps uniforms helped reduce heat absorption and provided a degree of camouflage in desert environments.

Lightweight materials and simplified designs improved ventilation, making them far more suitable for hot climates than standard European uniforms.

Headgear varied widely and included field caps, peaked caps, and the distinctive pith helmet, offering protection from the sun.

Goggles and scarves were often worn to guard against sand and glare, while uniforms could include shorts or lightweight trousers depending on conditions and personal preference.

Despite their practical adaptations, these uniforms retained key elements of German military identity, including insignia and rank markings.

Over time, variations appeared due to supply conditions and the realities of extended campaigning.

Afrika Korps uniforms remain among the most recognisable of the Second World War, reflecting the challenges of desert warfare and the need for specialised equipment in extreme environments.
