The Handley Page Hampden B Mk.I was a British twin-engine medium bomber developed in the late 1930s for the Royal Air Force.

As one of the RAF’s primary bombers at the outbreak of the Second World War, it formed part of the trio known as the “twin-engine bombers,” alongside the Wellington and Whitley.

Designed by Handley Page, the Hampden was notable for its slim fuselage and compact crew arrangement, which earned it the nickname “Flying Suitcase.”

Despite its somewhat cramped interior, the aircraft offered good speed and manoeuvrability for its class.

In its early operational career, the Hampden was employed in daylight bombing missions over Europe, but heavy losses led to a shift toward night operations.

It went on to serve effectively in night bombing roles, mine-laying (“gardening”), and later as a torpedo bomber with Coastal Command.

Although eventually replaced by more advanced four-engine bombers, the Hampden played a significant role during the early years of the war, contributing to the RAF’s offensive operations against enemy targets.

The Handley Page Hampden B Mk.I stands as an important example of early-war bomber design, reflecting both the challenges and rapid evolution of aerial warfare during this period.
