The AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) attack aircraft developed from the original Harrier family.

Designed primarily for close air support and ground attack missions, the aircraft was developed by McDonnell Douglas (later Boeing) in cooperation with British Aerospace, building upon the pioneering concept of vectored thrust that allows the aircraft to operate from short runways, forward operating bases, and amphibious assault ships.

Entering service with the United States Marine Corps in the 1980s, the AV-8B Harrier II introduced significant improvements over earlier Harrier models.

These included a redesigned composite wing for increased payload capacity, a more powerful Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine, improved avionics, and enhanced cockpit visibility.

These upgrades allowed the aircraft to carry a greater weapons load while maintaining the unique V/STOL capabilities that make the Harrier so versatile in combat.

The Harrier II has seen operational service in numerous conflicts, including the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, where it proved highly effective in providing close air support to ground forces.

Its ability to operate close to the battlefield from small carriers or improvised bases gives it a unique tactical advantage compared to conventional jet aircraft.
