The Pilatus PC-9/A/M is a modernised variant of the proven PC-9/A turboprop trainer, operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as part of its updated pilot training system.

Retaining the reliable Swiss airframe and Pratt & Whitney PT6A-62 turboprop engine delivering 950 shaft horsepower, the “/M” version introduced advanced digital avionics, a glass cockpit with multi-function displays, GPS navigation, and improved communication systems to better prepare trainee pilots for transition to contemporary fast jets and multi-role aircraft.

First delivered in the early 2010s under the Pilot Training Enhancement Program, the PC-9/A/M offered improved situational awareness, streamlined cockpit workflows, and compatibility with modern air combat training requirements.

Its tandem-seat configuration, excellent manoeuvrability, and robust airframe allowed it to continue serving as a versatile training platform for basic, advanced, and weapons training missions.

While visually similar to the original PC-9/A, the “M” upgrade ensured that the aircraft met 21st-century training standards, extending its service life until the RAAF’s transition to the new Pilatus PC-21.
