Located in the fertile Murghab River delta in modern-day Turkmenistan, Margiana was one of the key centres of the Oxus Civilization—also known as the Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC)—flourishing between 2000 and 1700 BC.
This Bronze Age culture was renowned for its sophisticated urban settlements, monumental fortifications, and long-distance trade connections linking Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and Central Asia.
The region’s wealth and influence were greatly enhanced by the presence of a lapis lazuli mine, a source of the deep-blue semi-precious stone prized across the ancient world.
Margiana’s craftsmen worked the gem into beads, inlays, and ornaments, which were traded alongside metals, ceramics, and luxury goods.
The mine’s output was exported via caravan routes to royal courts and temples as far afield as Egypt and Sumer, making Margiana an important hub in the early Silk Road network.
Archaeological discoveries reveal well-planned cities with imposing mud-brick walls, ceremonial complexes, and richly furnished burials containing gold, silver, and imported artefacts.
These finds speak to the region’s prosperity, cosmopolitan connections, and central role in the cultural and economic landscape of the ancient Near East during the Bronze Age.
