The Junkers F13 holds the distinction of being the world's first all-metal, purpose-built passenger aircraft—and a revolutionary leap forward in aviation design.
Introduced in 1919, the F13 featured a sleek, corrugated duralumin fuselage, cantilevered monoplane wings, and an enclosed cabin for four passengers—ushering in a new era of commercial air travel.
This Early Production variant, fitted with winter skis, represents a specialised adaptation for operations in snowbound regions across Europe, Russia, and North America.
The fixed ski landing gear replaced standard wheels, enabling landings on frozen lakes, snowy fields, and remote arctic runways—making it a critical lifeline in winter transport and postal routes.
Powered by inline water-cooled engines such as the BMW IIIa or Junkers L2, and crewed by a single open-cockpit pilot, the F13 was both elegant and robust.
Its combination of advanced aerodynamics, structural strength, and cold-weather capability made it a trusted pioneer aircraft in civil aviation history.
