Orion Figures 1/72 Modern Soviet Federals 1995 # 72003
“Modern Soviet Federals 1995” is a bit of a misnomer, as the Soviet Union had dissolved in 1991.
By 1995, these forces were part of the Russian Federation, most notably engaged in the First Chechen War (1994–1996).
Despite the political change, many soldiers still used Soviet-era equipment, doctrine, and organisation, giving them a distinctly “Soviet” appearance and feel.
Russian federal troops in 1995 were a mix of regular army units, internal security forces, and conscripts, often with varying levels of training and experience.
Many soldiers were young conscripts with limited preparation for the harsh realities of combat, particularly in urban environments such as Grozny.
This lack of readiness was exposed during early operations, where coordination and morale were significant challenges.
In terms of equipment, troops typically wore Soviet-style uniforms such as the Afghanka or newer camouflage patterns like VSR (“Flora”).
Body armour was inconsistent, and many soldiers relied on basic helmets like the SSh-68.
Standard weapons included the AK-74 assault rifle, along with machine guns such as the PKM and support from RPG-7 anti-tank weapons.
Armoured units deployed vehicles like the T-72 and T-80 tanks, as well as BMP infantry fighting vehicles and BTR armoured personnel carriers.
Combat during this period was often intense and chaotic, especially in urban warfare.
Russian forces faced determined resistance from Chechen fighters, leading to heavy losses and forcing adaptations in tactics.
Over time, units improved coordination, relying more on artillery and armoured support to reduce infantry exposure.
The soldiers of this period represent a transitional military force—caught between the legacy of the Soviet system and the emerging structure of the modern Russian Army.
Their experience in 1995 highlighted both the strengths of inherited equipment and the weaknesses in training, leadership, and organisation during a time of significant political and military upheaval.
