Orion Figures 1/72 WWI Pilots # 72003
WWI pilots were among the first military aviators in history, operating fragile, early aircraft during a time when aviation itself was still in its infancy.
When the First World War began in 1914, planes were primarily used for reconnaissance—spotting enemy positions and directing artillery fire.
However, as both sides sought to control the skies, aerial combat quickly developed, giving rise to the first fighter pilots.
Aircraft of the period were typically made from wood and fabric, with open cockpits that exposed pilots to harsh weather, freezing temperatures, and strong winds at altitude.
Navigation instruments were basic, and safety features such as parachutes were not widely issued, especially early in the war.
This made flying an extremely dangerous undertaking, even without enemy action.
As the war progressed, pilots began engaging each other in dogfights using machine guns mounted to fire through the propeller arc—an innovation made possible by synchronization gear.
Tactics evolved rapidly, with pilots developing manoeuvres and formations to gain advantage in combat.
Skilled individuals became known as “aces,” credited with multiple aerial victories, and some—like Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron”—became famous figures.
WWI pilots often painted personal markings on their aircraft, adding a sense of identity and morale.
Despite this, life expectancy for new pilots could be very short due to mechanical failures, limited training, and intense combat conditions.
By the end of the war in 1918, air power had become a recognised and important element of modern warfare.
WWI pilots helped lay the foundations for military aviation, transforming it from a reconnaissance tool into a key component of combat operations.
