The Westland Puma HC.1 is a highly capable tactical transport helicopter that has served the Royal Air Force since the early 1970s.

Built under licence from Aérospatiale, the HC.1 variant was adapted to meet British operational requirements, becoming a reliable workhorse for battlefield mobility, troop transport, and support missions around the world.

Powered by twin Turbomeca Turmo engines, the Puma HC.1 delivers strong performance in hot and high conditions, with excellent agility and a spacious cabin able to carry up to 16 fully equipped troops or equivalent cargo.

Its compact size and high power-to-weight ratio make it ideal for rapid insertion, medical evacuation, and resupply tasks, both in hostile environments and humanitarian roles.

The Puma HC.1 saw extensive service in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous overseas deployments, earning a reputation for ruggedness, adaptability, and dependable performance.

Its distinctive profile — high tail boom, sliding doors, and four-blade main rotor — makes it one of the most recognisable RAF helicopters of its era.
