The Lockheed SR-71B Blackbird is the dedicated two-seat training version of the legendary SR-71 strategic reconnaissance aircraft.

Developed for the United States Air Force, the SR-71B was designed to prepare pilots and reconnaissance systems officers for the extreme demands of flying at the edge of the atmosphere, where speeds exceeded Mach 3 and altitudes surpassed 80,000 feet.

Unlike the single-seat SR-71A, the SR-71B features an elevated rear cockpit with full flight controls, allowing instructors to supervise and train new crews during high-speed, high-altitude missions.

Despite the additional cockpit, the aircraft retained the Blackbird’s remarkable performance thanks to its powerful Pratt & Whitney J58 engines, specialised fuel systems, and advanced heat-resistant titanium construction.

Only two SR-71B aircraft were built, making them among the rarest members of the Blackbird family.

Used throughout the programme’s lifetime, they played a vital role in keeping SR-71 crews proficient and mission-ready.

With its distinctive twin-cockpit profile and the same futuristic lines as the operational variant, the SR-71B remains a fascinating and iconic aircraft in the history of reconnaissance aviation.
