RS Models 1/72 Curtiss Hawk II # 92294
The Curtiss Hawk II was an American biplane fighter aircraft, developed in the early 1930s by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation.
A direct descendant of the successful Curtiss P-6 Hawk, the Hawk II was designed as an export version of the U.S. Army’s P-6, featuring modifications for international customers.
Known for its sturdy construction and excellent maneuverability, the Hawk II found success with various air forces worldwide during the interwar period.
Key Features of the Curtiss Hawk II:
- Biplane configuration with a steel-tube fuselage and fabric-covered wings, providing the aircraft with the rigidity necessary for both combat and aerobatic performance.
- Powered by a Curtiss V-1570 Conqueror engine (12-cylinder, liquid-cooled), giving it a top speed of approximately 295 km/h (183 mph), and providing good performance for the era.
- Armament: Typically equipped with two .30 caliber M1919 Browning machine guns mounted in the fuselage, synchronized to fire through the propeller arc. It also had the ability to carry small bombs for ground attack missions.
- Open cockpit with basic instrumentation, allowing for good pilot visibility and a relatively simple, yet effective, design for its time.
Role and Operational Use:
The Hawk II was primarily used as a fighter and ground attack aircraft in the 1930s, before more modern monoplanes started to dominate military aviation. It became an export success, with several nations adopting the aircraft, including:
- China, which used the Hawk II in combat during the Second Sino-Japanese War, where it proved useful in engaging Japanese aircraft and conducting ground-attack missions.
- Cuba, which operated the Hawk II in its air force.
- Thailand (Siam), Colombia, Bolivia, and other countries, often using the aircraft for both military training and defense purposes.
Performance and Legacy:
The Hawk II was well-regarded for its agility and robust construction, making it reliable in combat situations despite its relatively light armament.
It was highly maneuverable, thanks to its biplane design, and was effective at lower altitudes where dogfights were common.
While it was gradually phased out by more advanced monoplane fighters in the late 1930s and early 1940s, the Curtiss Hawk II made a significant impact in several smaller air forces and conflicts around the world.
Its rugged design and versatility allowed it to serve in a variety of roles, from air superiority to close air support.
The Hawk II helped establish Curtiss-Wright’s reputation as one of the premier aircraft manufacturers of the interwar period and paved the way for later Curtiss designs like the famous P-40 Warhawk.
Although overshadowed by more advanced fighters in World War II, the Curtiss Hawk II played a pivotal role in military aviation during its time.
