The TP-88 AEW is the Swedish Air Force designation for the Saab 340 AEW, an advanced Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft developed by Saab to provide long-range surveillance, airspace control, and command-and-control capability.
Based on the proven Saab 340 regional turboprop, the TP-88 is distinguished by its prominent dorsal-mounted Erieye phased-array radar, which provides wide-area coverage without the need for a rotating radome.
This fixed-array system allows continuous monitoring of air and surface targets over hundreds of kilometres, offering excellent detection of low-flying aircraft and cruise missiles—an essential requirement for Sweden’s air defence doctrine.
Operated by the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet), the TP-88 plays a crucial role in coordinating fighter intercepts, monitoring national airspace, and supporting joint operations with allied forces.
The aircraft combines long endurance, reliable turboprop efficiency, and advanced electronics, making it well suited to sustained patrol missions over land and sea.
