During the Napoleonic Wars, the British Light Infantry were renowned for their speed, discipline, and flexible tactics on the battlefield.

When facing the threat of enemy cavalry, these highly trained soldiers could rapidly form a defensive square — one of the most iconic infantry manoeuvres of the era.

In square formation, ranks of soldiers positioned themselves on all four sides, presenting bristling walls of bayonets to repel charging horsemen.

Ammunition carriers, officers, and wounded men were placed safely in the centre, while the outer ranks fired controlled volleys to break enemy momentum.

This formation required absolute discipline, as even a small gap could be disastrous.

Light Infantry regiments, distinguished by their skirmishing skills, open-order fighting, and quick movement, brought exceptional professionalism to this defensive tactic.

Their green or red uniforms, shakos, muskets, and equipment reflected the evolving British military style of the early 19th century.
