The Nakajima C6N1 “Myrt” was a high-speed, long-range reconnaissance aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the latter stages of World War II.

Designed to operate from aircraft carriers, it quickly earned a reputation for its remarkable speed and ability to evade Allied fighters.

Introduced in 1944, the C6N1 was powered by a Nakajima Homare radial engine, giving it a top speed of over 370 mph — making it one of the fastest Japanese aircraft of its type.

Its streamlined design and long, slender fuselage allowed for excellent range and high-altitude performance, crucial for photographing enemy fleets and bases with minimal risk.

The C6N1-S was a rare late-war night fighter variant, adapted with upward-firing oblique guns in an attempt to counter B-29 bombers during nocturnal raids.

Though limited in combat success, this variant reflected Japan’s desperate innovation in the war’s final year.

Nicknamed “Myrt” by the Allies, this sleek and agile aircraft stands as a testament to Japanese aeronautical engineering and reconnaissance doctrine during WWII.
