Details

The M26 Pershing, initially designated T26E3, was a heavy tank developed by the United States during the final stages of the Second World War.

Designed to address the limitations of earlier American tanks, it introduced improved firepower, protection, and overall battlefield performance, marking a significant step forward in U.S. armoured development.

Armed with a powerful 90mm gun, the Pershing was capable of effectively engaging heavily armoured enemy vehicles while also supporting infantry operations.

Its thicker armour provided enhanced protection compared to earlier designs, while a well-balanced layout ensured improved crew efficiency and combat effectiveness.

Despite being classified as a heavy tank at the time, the M26 offered a good balance between mobility and protection, allowing it to operate alongside medium tanks while delivering increased firepower.

Its torsion bar suspension system contributed to better ride quality and cross-country performance.

Entering combat in Europe in 1945, the Pershing demonstrated its capabilities against advanced enemy armour, helping to close the gap between Allied and German tank performance.

It went on to serve in the Korean War and influenced the development of future American main battle tanks.
