The Panzerkampfwagen VI King Tiger, officially designated Sd.Kfz. 182, was one of the most formidable heavy tanks fielded by Germany during the Second World War.
Combining exceptionally thick armour with a powerful main gun, it was designed to dominate the battlefield at long range and counter heavily armoured Allied vehicles.
Early production variants featured the distinctive “Porsche” turret, recognised by its rounded front and curved contours.
This design, originally intended for an alternative chassis, was utilised on the first King Tiger vehicles before later production standardised on a different turret configuration.
Equipped with a high-velocity 88mm gun, the King Tiger was capable of engaging enemy armour at considerable distances with great accuracy and effectiveness.
Its heavily sloped armour provided outstanding protection, making it extremely difficult to penetrate from the front under most combat conditions.
This variant was also coated with Zimmerit, a specialised anti-magnetic paste applied to the exterior surfaces to prevent magnetic mines from adhering to the tank’s armour.
This added another layer of defensive capability, particularly in close-quarters combat situations.
Despite its immense firepower and protection, the King Tiger’s weight and complexity placed significant demands on mobility and maintenance.
Nevertheless, it saw service on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, where it earned a reputation as a powerful and intimidating presence on the battlefield.
