The Sturmpanzer IV, nicknamed "Brummbär" (German for "Grizzly Bear"), was a heavily armored German assault gun developed during World War II to provide close infantry support in urban and fortified combat.
Built on the Panzer IV chassis, the Brummbär was armed with a powerful 150mm StuH 43 L/12 howitzer, capable of demolishing buildings, bunkers, and enemy strongpoints with devastating high-explosive shells.
Introduced in 1943, the Brummbär featured thick frontal armor for increased survivability in street fighting and was used effectively in battles such as Kursk, Warsaw, and the defense of Germany.
Its boxy superstructure housed four crew members and provided substantial protection, though the vehicle was slow and somewhat mechanically burdensome.
Feared for its destructive firepower, the Brummbär played a key role in the German army’s efforts to break through entrenched positions, earning its reputation as a formidable support weapon in close-quarters warfare.
